How to choose an MCS-certified heat pump installer

Published and last updated 15 October 2026

Only MCS-certified installers can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, so certification is the first thing to check. After that, compare at least three written quotes, each based on a proper heat loss survey and showing the £7,500 grant deducted.

Why does MCS certification matter?

MCS certification is a condition of the grant: it shows the installer is technically competent and that the products they use meet the required standards. Use the MCS find an installer tool to check.

How many quotes should you get?

At least three. Ofgem recommends getting quotes from more than one installer, and comparing them is the easiest way to spot an over- or under-sized system.

What should a good quote include?

A good quote is based on a room-by-room heat loss calculation and lists every part of the job.

A good quote shows

  1. ✓Test 1: Heat loss survey results and heat pump size (kW)
  2. ✓Test 2: Outdoor unit make and model
  3. ✓Test 3: Hot water cylinder
  4. ✓Test 4: Radiator schedule
  5. ✓Test 5: Controls
  6. ✓Test 6: Electrical work
  7. ✓Test 7: Commissioning and MCS certificate
  8. ✓Test 8: Warranty terms
  9. ✓Test 9: Full price, grant deduction and balance
  10. ✓Test 10: Consumer code membership

What are the red flags?

Be wary of anyone who quotes without a survey, pressures you to sign the same day, or asks you to confirm Ofgem consent before you've chosen them.

  • No heat loss calculation
  • Quote doesn't show the grant deducted
  • Asks for a large upfront deposit
  • Can't give an MCS certificate number
  • Vague on warranty

What should you ask an installer?

Ask these eight questions before you choose.

  1. Are you MCS-certified for heat pumps, and what's your number?
  2. Which consumer code are you a member of?
  3. Will you do a room-by-room heat loss survey?
  4. What size heat pump and why?
  5. Which radiators need changing?
  6. Where will the outdoor unit and cylinder go?
  7. What warranty covers the unit and the installation?
  8. Who handles the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and when will I hear from Ofgem?

What if something goes wrong?

Contact your installer first, then MCS, and if needed the consumer code body your installer belongs to, such as RECC or HIES. Ofgem handles scheme questions: BUS.Enquiry@ofgem.gov.uk, 0330 053 2006.
