Warm Homes: Local Grant in Cumbria

Published and last updated 15 October 2026

Westmorland and Furness Council leads a £12,328,580 Warm Homes: Local Grant with Cumberland Council, funding free energy improvements for eligible households in homes rated EPC D to G until March 2028. For many rural Cumbrian homes heated by oil or LPG, the £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is the main route to a heat pump.

What does Cumberland's scheme offer?

Cumberland Council lists loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solar panels and high heat retention storage heaters, fitted free by an approved contractor; heat pumps aren't listed, so ask the council directly.

Who qualifies?

The home must be privately owned and lived in, rated EPC D to G, and the household must live in an eligible postcode, earn under £36,000 a year before tax, or receive certain benefits.

Funding is limited and focused on neighbourhoods with high fuel poverty.

Is the scheme open?

Cumberland's application form is temporarily unavailable while funding is reviewed and there's a waiting list; you can register interest through the council's Housing Energy team on 0330 056 5698.

Why does the £9,000 grant matter in Cumbria?

Many rural Cumbrian homes have no mains gas and heat with oil or LPG, which is exactly who the £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme rate is for until 31 March 2027.

Can you combine this with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Not for the same heat pump: a property that has had government funding for its heat pump can't also get the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but you could use this scheme for insulation and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for the heat pump.

Which areas do we cover?

We cover Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Cheshire and Cumbria.
